How much should I pay for a plane ticket?

A question that has been on all air travelers mind at one time or another is “Did the person sitting next to me get a better deal on their ticket?”  This is a great question considering there aren’t many people on the plane that paid the same price.  There are a lot of variables that go into the price you pay for airfare (where you are going, where you are departing from, what time of  day you are traveling, what date you are traveling on, etc…).  To get the very best deal, you must do a few things prior to buying the ticket.

  • Book travel at least 2 weeks in advance
  • Avoid traveling the 2 days before and after major holidays
  • Join frequent flyer programs from airlines if you travel by air on a steady basis
  • Be flexible on dates if possible
  • Compare prices from different sites
  • If you live close to multiple airports, or if there are multiple airports around your destination, check the prices to and from each airport.  Some airports are more expensive to travel out of than others.
  • Take the early and late flights.  They are usually cheaper than the ones during the daylight.

Honestly, if you get a roundtrip ticket to anywhere for around $275, I believe you have got a great deal, and if you follow these steps, you are assured the best airfare possible.
