Getaway to Pittsburgh
5th January, 2010 - Posted by Traveler -
If there is one city in America that symbolizes blue-collar work ethic and union pride, it has to be Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Home of the Pittsburgh Steelers, Pittsburgh made its mark by being a major steel producing city in the early 20th century. The town lays on the banks of the great Ohio River which is formed near downtown by the Allegheny and Monongahela Rivers. Pittsburgh has an estimated population of just over 300,000 residents and ranks 25th in the nation on job density in the urban areas. Sports fans have plenty to choose from if they are visiting the area. Not only does the 6 time Super Bowl champion Steelers call Pittsburgh home, the town also has the MLB Pirates, and the NHL Penguins. Situated on a plateau, the city itself is surrounded by beautiful rolling hills with an abundance of vegetation. Winters can be cold so make sure you bring a jacket if traveling after August.
