Higher airfares are predicted this year

airport-terminalFor most Americans, the past year was one of the most financially stressful periods in their lives.  The recession caused us to pinch pennies and do away with luxuries. Airlines had to battle to win business from travelers, as fewer people chose to fly.  Most of last year, we saw airlines offering one-way airfares as low as $39, and roundtrip tickets were also at all-time lows.  In the upcoming year, fewer flights to destinations will be offered and companies have already started to raise baggage rates.  More government regulations will also contribute to the fare increases.  Baggage fees are already outrageous on most carriers, with only a few airlines like Southwest and Jet Blue offering free checked baggage.  The best way to minimize travel costs associated with air travel is to book early and do your homework.  Some airports are cheaper to fly in and out of than others so flying into an airport 20 miles further from your destination could save you money.  Always do several searches on different airlines to compare rates and remember to be flexible on travel dates to get the best fares.  One thing that is certainly not going to get any better is the airport security hassel, but to keep us safe in flight, I don’t mind the extra time it takes to get to my gate.
