If you are wanting to experience the real American west, no place is better than Deadwood, South Dakota.  Native Americans considered the land around Deadwood (The Black Hills) sacred.  Deadwood’s natural beauty consists of rugged mountains, beautiful creeks, and abundant wildlife.  The town saw its heyday in the 1800’s when gold was discovered in the Black Hills, which in turn lead to Deadwood being populated with rough and rowdy miners, outlaws, and cowboys.  21st century Deadwood consists of several Old West inspired casino’s, rodeos, museums, old west reenactments, festivals, great music, and countless other attractions.  The town’s most famous resident, Wild Bill Hickok, is buried right outside town along with other famous outlaws like Calamity Jane.  During the summer, especially during bike week, Deadwood swells to over 100,000 people thanks to the Sturgis Bike Rally that is held only 10 miles away in Sturgis, South Dakota.  In the winter months, all of the best winter activities are offered including snow skiing, snow mobile riding, and ice fishing.  Being so close to Mt. Rushmore, Deadwood is discovered for the first time by tourists passing through to see the famous monument.  Lodging is plentiful and tours and trail rides are offered in town.  If you want to see the best of the West, look no further than Deadwood.
