31st January, 2010 - Posted by Traveler -
Located in the desert of southern Arizona, Tombstone is probably the most famous “old Western” towns in in America. Known for its legenday shootout at the O.K. Corral, and its famous residents like Wyatt Earp and Doc Holliday, Tombstone has been written about in many books and made and spotlighted in several movies. The town of Tombstone sprang up as mining town in the late 1800’s and quickly drew prospectors, and the rough and rowdy type as residents. Tombstone was a thriving boomtown and became filled with casinos, brothels, bandits, and people who were just looking for a better life. The town quickly withered not long after getting its start when the mines quit producing and filled with water. The population today is about 1500 permanent residents, but has about 400,000 tourists that visit annually. Tombstone is located in Cochise County in the Southeastern corner of Arizona of Hwy 80. Situated at over 4000 ft. above sea level, Tombstone doesn’t get the 110 degree days that much of the state does very often. Reenactments of the famous O.K. Corral shootout are given daily, along with other old west entertainment. The town today is a far cry from its older days, but is a great place to visit while you are visiting southern Arizona.
