The Battle of Gettysburg, near Gettysburg, Pennsylvania was the most important and costly battle in American history. Over three days, in July 1963, over 51,00o casualties were claimed in this bitter battle between the North and South. General Robert E. Lee and his confederate forces made their farthest advancement North, in would would turn out to be a loss for the South and the turning point in the Civil War. The Memorial spans the entire battlefield and park rangers give tours and explain the events and locations of each major scene from the battle. Beautiful statues, plaques, and weapons of the day are on display for visitors to gaze upon to help paint a picture of what, and how things happened on those terrible three days of conflict. Nobody today can actually comprehend what these men went through, and the emotions they felt as they watched their friends give their lives for the cause they supported. A trip to the park is an experience that you will never forget. The park is entertaining, educational, and a great way to honor our ancestors.
