Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay area
25th April, 2009 - Posted by admin -

It’s April and that means just one thing in Maryland and the Chesapeake Bay…it’s blue crab season. Officially it runs from April 1st to December, but now is the best time if you ask me. Soft shells, lightly floured little gems of the sea are abundant and indeed highly sought after at most of your finer restaurants.
I start by a walk along the bay itself, which of course takes you past many a restaurant featuring these hardy crustaceans steamed, boiled, fried or sauteed. It’s really up to you and your personal tastes. Getting there is easy with www.cheaperticketprices.com and that’s just the start of it all. Locals will show you how to get down and dirty with picking your crabs as well as the best way to eat them.
I recommend any place that has tables with a big hole cut out in the middle and a trash can below it. This is for all your shells and juice and tends towards a culinary adventure that’s both messy and delicious at the same time. Check out http://www.bethesda.org/ for all the happenings. Some restaurants offer a more discrete dining experience, but the best way is a good old fashioned “Crab Boil.”
Fill a pot with freshly caught blue crabs, some Old Bay seasoning and corn on the cob and potatoes and cook for an hour or so. Pour it out over a picnic table covered with newspapers and you’ve got yourself a great dinner and lots of fun as you pick apart the shells to get at the good stuff.
