Weather delay checklist for air travel

waiting-at-airportOver the past week, millions of people were slammed by a winter storm that dumped snow on 49 of the 50 states, with Hawaii being the only one to escape winter’s wrath.  Snow storms are synonomous with winter, but only the Northern states, and towns situated at high elevations are equipped to deal with snow and ice.  Even those towns that are used to snowfall and its removal are sometimes overwhelmed by the storms and business, airports, and travel into and out of town is closed.  When it comes to snowfall in the South, everything is pretty much shut down even if only a couple inches of snow falls.  If you happen to be traveling when these storms become to dangerous to allow departure, you need to be prepared in advance.  Being stuck at the airport out of  town, can be a  painful experience, especially if you happen to be stuck at a small regional airport that shuts down after certain hours.  The first thing to do is remain calm and assess the situation.  If you are going to be there overnight, the most logical thing to do is get a cab and find a motel.  The bad thing is, if you are stranded, that means many others will be too and motels will fill up quick.  With technology these days, reserving a room over a cell phone or notebook should be done as soon as possible after you find out you will be there overnight.  When packing for the trip, folks tend to pack less these days to bypass the extra baggage fees that most air carriers charge these days.  It’s better to be safe than sorry when you are traveling in the winter months when packing.  If you have to make an all-nighter at an airport, you will need things like books, magazines, notebooks, cell phones, and chargers to keep  yourself occupied during the wait.  If you are stuck at the airport, you will be subject to pay those high airport prices on food and entertainment if you don’t have your own.  Being a member to clubs like AAA really comes in handy and pays for itself in times like these.  The discounts you get on things like motel rooms and at restraunts pay for the price of membership fast since memberships are only 30 to 100 dollars a year.  The main thing is to stay calm.  The weather will eventually clear, but being prepared for the boring wait will make time pass that much faster.
