Tips for picking the best motel

When having to pick a motel while on vacation or business trip, one should take into account many factors before making the purchase.  These days, price is probably the #1 thing that makes our mind up for us.  Although price should be one of the most important factors, especially if you are on a budget, here are a few other things you should contemplate to help you make the right decision.

  • Location-Pick a place that is close to the attractions or place you plan on attending while you are in town.  Choosing a place to stay that is several miles from where you plan to visit because of a lower price can backfire on you, especially with the price of gas and traffic these days.
  • Amenities-Always get a motel that has the amenities you seek that does not charge for them.  For example, some places can charge over$10/day for internet access.
  • Brand Name-Most motels that are clustered together, no matter what brand, will be close in price.
  • Free parking-Most places in the downtown area do not have free parking and can charge a bundle to park in their garages.
  • Discounts-Always take advantage of your AAA and other discounts that motels offer.  Make sure you ask if they offer these discounts before making reservations.
  • Pets-If you are traveling with pets, make sure you find a place that is pet friendly.
  • Safety-Don’t make an exception for safety to save a few dollars.  If a motel has hourly rates, is located in a slum, or doesn’t accept credit cards, DON’T STAY THERE!
