NFL says goodbye to salary cap

The rule putting restrictions on the amount a team can spend on players has been lifted.  There are many pros and cons to the cap being lifted for both the owners and players.  The biggest argument for the cap is that without it, teams from smaller markets could never compete against the teams from the larger markets that bring in more money.  There will also be no limit on how much a team has to spend.  Teams used to have a minimum payroll to meet of about $100 million, but now teams will be allowed to cut spending and spend only as much as they want.  The New York Yankees are an example of what can happen when teams that have a lot of money can achieve.  With their huge payroll, they have been able to win more championships than any other team.  To counter that idea, the Florida Marlins have been able to win two championships in their short history with one of the smallest payrolls.  The Marlins use an equation using player statistics when they build a team.  This equation has allowed them to pick up great players at far less the cost of picking up big names like A-rod.  Once they win a championship, they pretty much clean house and build a new team.  Only time will tell how this will work for the NFL.  With owners like Jerry Jones in the NFL, George Steinbrenner may have to open his wallet a little more to have the biggest payroll.
